KOMATSU AIRPORT - AIR BASE 2018

- with aggressors -

9th of May.

After a long drive the day before we reached today Komatsu Airport.

Komatsu Airport is situated in the city of Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture.

This airport is shared both by civil aviation and Japan Air Self-Defence Force.

Also today the weather was not magnificent but we had a few sunny periods during the day.

The day started with weapon (missile) unloading of 4x F-15's. (see pictures below)

1 runway : 06/24 (2,700 m)

Currently based are :

  • 303rd Tactical Fighter Squadron with Mitsubishi F-15J/DJ and Kawasaki T-4 (6th Air Wing)
  • 306th Tactical Fighter Squadron with Mitsubishi F-15J/DJ and Kawasaki T-4 (6th Air Wing)
  • Tactical Fighter Training group (aggressor unit of the Air Tactics Development Wing) with Mitsubishi F-15J/DJ (with nice camouflage schemes) and Kawasaki T-4 .
  • Central Air Civil Engineering Group, 2nd Squadron.
  • Komatsu Air Rescue Squadron flying Mitsubishi UH-60J (search and rescue) and U-125A (British Aerospace 125).
  • Komatsu Air Traffic Control Squadron
  • Komatsu Weather Squadron
  • Komatsu Regional Air Police Squadron

Notice that Japan is the largest customer of the F-15 Eagle outside the United States.

This visit was for me one of the highlights together with both visits at Hyakuri & visit at Nagoya.

I wanted to see the aggressors with their nice camouflage schemes.

We noticed during this day six different colors/schemes.

Here we used 3 spots, first one was at the terminal but this is not a good place when you have sun.

Our second spot was situated near the golf course at runway 06 for landings.

This spot offers your maximum 3 to 5 clicks to capture the aircrafts landing.

For the second time during our trip we experienced a very friendly security check.

Our third and last spot was the best one however you need again a ladder of at least 90 cm.

Situated on de left side of runway 06 (near a sport field) this spot is ideal to take pictures from both take-offs and landings.

It was a very satisfying day at Komatsu.
